Many nicotine consumers are unable or unwilling to kick the habit and, increasingly, many are resorting to vaping (Electronic cigarettes or EVPs) as an alternative. We do not condone nor advocate smoking, we would however like to share some safety tips this Burn Awareness Week should a person choose in their own capacity to vape.

THE FACTS

  • Lithium batteries used in these devices can cause a fire or explosion leading to burn.
  • Injuries happen most often when electronic cigarettes are stored in the pocket.
  • Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are battery operated products designed to turn nicotine and other chemicals into a vapour to be inhaled.

DO

  • Charge your lithium batteries following the manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Use approved power sources.
  • Use the charging appliance that comes with the product.

DO NOT

  • Put the device in your pocket when batteries are in it.
  • Use “standard” USB ports such as laptop USB ports or auto USB adapters.
  • Keep extra batteries in direct sunlight.
  • Overcharge the device.

SHOULD A BURN INJURY OCCUR

  1. STOP, DROP & ROLL if clothing catches fire.
  2. Remove all clothing and jewellery from the injured area.
  3. Cool the burn with Burnshield emergency burncare.
  4. Seek medical attention.
